Why CAT?

In pursuance of the Supreme Court Judgment(s) on August 14, 2003 and October 31, 2002 and in terms of Policy Framework laid down by the Ministry of HRD, AICTE has made the following rules on Common Entrance Test for admission to MBA Programmers in the country.

Admissions to MBA / PGDBM (or equal) programmers shall be made through the All India Entrance Test (s). For the year 2007-2008, admissions shall be through one of the five All India Entrance Tests, namely - CAT (conducted by IIMs), JMET, MAT, ATMA and XAT.

About CAT

CAT (Common Admission Test) for two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Industrial Safety & Environmental Management (PGDISEM) is held every year and is accomplishing by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). This is the first step in the process of seeking admission to this course. CAT is held at Ahmadabad, Bhopal, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Tiruchirapally, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Nagpur, Patna, Lucknow, Chandigarh and New Delhi.

CAT is a multiple choice written exam designed to test a candidate’s ability & aptitude under a time constraint. CAT is not a test of intelligence; it only indicates whether one has the necessary aptitude to do well in the course one wishes to pursue. This test also identifies the candidate’s general scholastic skills.

CAT gives the students a scorecard stating their section-wise and overall performance. CAT scorecard does not give any absolute or actual scores rather being an aptitude test, it grades students on a relative scale. The scores are presented in two formats Percentage score (%score) and Percentile scores for each section and the overall test. The percentage score represents normalized percentage of scores secured by the candidate. It is a relative method of representing the score. This is not the actual percentage score. Percentile indicates student’s relative performance position among the total students who took the CAT.

Selection to PGDISEM is based on the performance in CAT, group discussion, personal interview with due weight age to scholastic achievements and work experience. PGDISEM caters to those aspiring to follow careers in Management. CAT consists of questions in areas such as Quantitative, Reasoning, Verbal Skills, and Comprehension of ideas and English Language as a means of assessing ones skills to undertake PG studies in Management.
