Why Get your MBA now?
![]()
As you proceed with your business school applications from undergrad, one the major question you will always have to answer will be: “Why now?” Why do you desire to get your MBA education now versus 3-4 years from now, and why do you think you can add value to your potential program?
MBA programs want to see that you have done your research about business school, about the workload (which is significantly heavier compared to undergrad), about career paths, about take on, about professors, etc. Most programs (these days) amuse the idea of looking at outstanding applicants as the crow flies out of undergrad. These students (like you!) know that they can handle and MBA education right now; and schools do not want to miss out on these bright persons. Even top MBA programs like Stanford and Harvard at present have students right out of college, however not every school thinks it’s that great of an idea. I suggest that you call every school you are paying attention in, and ask them if they would think an applicant straight out of undergrad.
Why get your MBA now? Here are the main subjects I had focused on with this question:
(1). I am young & single, therefore I can move around at will to look for the schools (and companies after graduation) that best fit my personality
(2). some recruiters seek out these young MBAs precisely because they have no work experience. They come with no professional baggage and are therefore more malleable and better able to adopt to a new company culture.
(3). I am still a student, hence I know what doing homework feels like…compared to some older applicants who have been out of school for 5-6 years.
(4). The opportunity cost to get my MBA right now is at a minimum, and it will only go higher as I proceed with my career.
(5). from my student-athlete background, I bring an exceptional work ethic and discipline, which are crucial to success for any MBA student
You can think of some of the other quality you might have like a truly global background, an internet start-up company during your college years, etc. Please retain in order that they key is to know the flaw in your outline and bring them up to admissions officers before they do. Tell them that you are aware of your weaknesses, and provide them with a plan on how you are going to address them. They will like that; it shows your adulthood.
